Save Animal Habitats

FisheriesHabitat

A great way to preserve our environment is to preserve the many different species, we have as well as their habitat. Preserving their habitat is very important if we want ecosystems to sustain themselves. However, there is so much pressure today to destroy all of these habitats for things such as resorts, hotels, hunting, and logging that it is sometimes hard to preserve them. We should all do what we can in order to preserve ecosystems around the world. How can you take a stand and bring more attention and changes to this issue?

Keep Warm Spend Less

energy-conservation-tips-for-fall-and-winter

It’s about that time again. The time each year when we all lose a ridiculous amount of money to keep our bodies warm all day everyday. Having central heating is so necessary, but can be extremely expensive from keeping the heater on all day with the increase of hot water usage. I have the misfortune of having to use a portable electric heater in addition to the built in heater in my house because my room is unbearably cold all day everyday. You could either ask your parents to foot the bill or if you’re like me, you can follow one of these tips:

  • Seal duct work and any leaks you find. Wrapping these leaks with duct mastic will ensure that too much air isn’t lost. Also adding caulk or weatherstripping to seal air leaks around leaky doors and windows will help.
  • Make sure your heating system is routinely checked up and fixed if its damaged to maintain its efficiency.
  • Turn down the temperature of your water heater to the warm setting (120°F).
  • Open curtains on your south-facing windows during the day to heat your home with sunlight, and close them at night to block out the cold air. reduce the chill you may feel from cold windows.
  • Keep your fireplace damper closed when it’s not in use to keep warm air from escaping through the chimney.
  • If you’re already spending a fortune on heating, you might want to spend less on those energy sucking holiday lights. Use light-emitting diode (LED) holiday lights instead.

Environmental Careers

For anyone who loves the great outdoors or who wants to be active in keeping our environment clean, there are a growing number of careers in environmental science. These careers focus on the best ways to protect our natural resources, control pollution, and repair damaged natural areas. A lot of these jobs are very hands on. I myself have done some hands on environmental work. Although it was hard work, it was also a lot of fun and a great learning experience.
